So begins…
in which the author explains himself...
Why hello…
This is my first official blog post at this account and is hopefully something I’ll do more of in the future. I want to start creating a bit of a community here and will be using explanations of the creative process to help that happen. That, or I’ll start posting LOLcats pictures here, and instead of the cats, I’ll post pictures of my daughters doing strange and unusual stuff. Like the picture at right.
Anyhoo…
I am about to officially launch my first big novel, Boyd McCloyd. I have actually finished the second novel, but because I write everything by hand in a large amount of journals, I am, woefully, failing to motivate myself to type the stupid book out onto the computer. Sad, but true. However, considering that I’m releasing the first book and have finished the second book, what in the world do I do now? Well, that’s easy…start a new book.
But I haven’t been sure as to what to write for the second book for a while now. I have a Shanghai novel in me, but I don’t have enough research material to do that, and considering I teach full time and co-raise two beautiful little daughters on a diet of gruel and cruelty, I must find some other time to do research.
Thus, when in doubt, make stuff up. Which is what I’m going to do. I’ve been thinking a lot about long-form television dramas, ala Lost and Battlestar Galactica, and how they can have satisfying endings for their audience. I think that the endings of those shows are hard to make work, because I’m not sure that they really knew how they were going to end the show in the first place, so there’s been a ton of “make-it-up” kind of stuff going on there. I, too, would love to tell a massive, epic story and I’m going to try to do that with this next book. The key is that I have my initial premise in hand, but I want a satisfying conclusion to the story without making the stupid thing up.
So, I’m working on my ending right now. I’m trying to figure out exactly how to end this story in a way that would satisfy me as a reader. Tonight, I begin this long journey. Wish me luck…

Jamal Virani
on May 31st, 2009Wow Mr. G… Remember me? It’s Jamal, the scrawny, tall, brown guy you taught for half a year! You just left TMS (Toronto Montessori Schools in Toronto if you forgot us…) and didn’t tell us anything about where you were going. I thought you were still in Ghana! I am supposed to be studying for finals but surprisingly I got bored and decided to Google you (yes.. pretty random). After that failed miserably, I ended up typing in your book and found a link to this place. Imagine that, you got it out! I’m definitely gonna cop that book when I’ve got the money. Anyways hit me up… I’ve got a new blog also. Take it easy.
